Oakleaf Remembrance Service

The next Oakleaf Service is to be held at Leeds Parish Church on Sunday, 16th November 2008 at 3pm - all are very welcome

The Oakleaf Remembrance Service is a ceremony where names of loved ones are written down on a paper "oakleaf", placed on the altar and read out during the service. Photographs of the loved ones are placed around the font and children from a local school light a candle for each person who has died. A commemorative quilt which also represents lives of loved ones is hung on display throughout the service.

This service, can be seen as the first step towards starting the healing process, and gives the bereaved an opportunity to speak with others who are going through their own grieving. It gives a feeling of togetherness, that you are not alone. Many friendships have started in this way. Apart from trying to help alleviate the sorrow, Carole Whittingham (founder of SCARD) says "this Remembrance Service is my way of recognising that most road deaths are avoidable and it’s my way of informing society of that fact. But when a family loses a loved one on the road whatever the circumstances, it is totally devastating."

The service is held on the first Sunday after Remembrance Sunday.
